Starting tomorrow, Harris Teeter will have their Super Doubles. They will double up to a $2 value coupon. What this means is if you have a $2 coupon it will double to $4. Also ZVR are the e-coupons you load on your Harris Teeter card and will come off the items at the register. ZVR do not double. They can be used in conjunction with a printable coupon or coupon for the newspaper, peelies, etc. Lots of great deals this week. Get a rain check if they are out of stock and shop early in the morning or when they get a new shipment.

How I Save Money to Be a Stay-at-Home Mom

Save Money To Stay At Home

When I had my first child back in 2009 I became a stay at home mom by default. My son was born with a rare metabolic disorder (S.C.A.D) and needed to be fed around the clock 24 hours a day. With that huge responsibility it was difficult to return to work.

Six months into the pregnancy I was looking at our finances and seeing what could be eliminated. The biggest expense was our rent. We lived at the time in New Jersey and the rent was $1550 a month. We decided that after the birth we would move to North Carolina and thankfully he found a job 1 week after the baby was born and we moved down south. The best decision that we made.

Once we settled into the new 3 bedroom house which cost us $1000 a month in North Carolina we looked at our cell phone plan. We applied for an employee discount with our carrier at the time (Sprint) and also got a lower plan. We also got rid of our landline. What can I say, I am old school. Nowadays, you can shop around with the various wireless carriers and see who has the best plan for you. Always read the fine print if you do sign another contract, you will want to avoid those hidden fees.

Saving on Baby Items

With a new baby comes the cost of diapers, wipes, clothing, healthcare products, and medical bills. I decided that I would breastfeed which saved us on buying formula and I signed up with Freecycle.org for the Raleigh/Durham area to get clothing and other baby items from other moms. I got lots of toys, clothes, and children’s books for free.  I was able to diaper both my kids for free with coupons and at that time the term “Extreme Couponing” never existed. I earned points to get the $5 Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks and used them to buy other baby items like wipes. I was lucky to buy a box of Pampers wipes 720 count for $.53 shipped with my Amazon gift cards I earned.

I would get clothes from the kids at consignment shops, Once Upon a Child, Children’s Place, and Gymboree. I would recommend going to the Children’s Place and Gymboree’s website and sign up for notification of sales. I remember getting little outfits for $4.99 and free shipping when I spent $50 or more. I also had friends that donated old baby clothes.

Other places:
thrift stores
garage sales

Just writing this part makes me sick to my stomach because our cable bill each month with Comcast was running $160 a month. Too much money. So we decided to stream movies. We signed up with Netflix and Hulu and paid $7.99 a month. But what is even better is you can stream them to your television with an Apple TV, or Roku. You pay for the device which can cost $40-$150 depending on which one you buy. You can get the Roku app that will automatically sync with your device and act as a remote control! Goodbye cable!

Saving on Gas

I use GasBuddy, they tell you where the cheapest gas prices for your area. Another clever way to use GasBuddy is plan out your next road trip and which exits to stop at for the best gas prices.

Eating Out and Grocery Shopping

When I realized that eating at the Cheesecake Factory on any given Tuesday was out the door I was feeling blue. I love that place! But I quickly realized that I can still eat out and cut the budget by 75%! We for the past 5 years have used Restaurant.com gift cards. You can buy them at a discount price (I always buy several when they are $2-5 for a $25 gift card) and buy $35 worth of food and hand over the $25 gift card to spent $10 out of pocket! I can’t tell you how many great local places we discovered this way and we were able to get alot of food for $10!

When I would travel to South Carolina to see my family I would use the Restaurant.com gift cards on the road trip.

I also have a garden and I grow my own vegetables. The cost of produce is going up each year and I have to say that gardening has saved me $25 a month alone. I also look at the weekly grocery ads for my local grocery stores and pair them with coupon I would find. You can check out my post on where to find coupons.

I wanted to end this with a few words of encouragement. Its very important that you and your spouse/boyfriend are on the same page if you plan on being a stay at home mom. You also have to change your mindset. You have to start thinking about what you need and not what you want. Using excel and keeping track of your money will help you alot.

For any moms who stay at home, what has worked for you? Leave a comment below!
